Sometimes stumps are not the only thing to consider. Much of the land Is covered with dense growths of alder, birch and service berry. These are all shallow rooters which make a dense growth both above and below the ground. To clear the land without damaging the soil is a problem. Often it Is necessary to burn these trees where they have fallen In order to kill out the roots and root sprouts. Such a practice deprives the land of most of Its organic matter, leaving it light in color, hard to work, and with a tendency to dry out and bake badly. One season is required for this operation and no returnB whatever are derived from the land.
