We are all familiar with the circulars sent out by the so-called chambers of commerce In the little western towns. They call attention in a flattering way to the great bargains to be had In cut over land. Often It is offered at four or six dollars an acre and one would be led to believe that clearing the land of stumps Is an Incidental feature In the building of a home. This is far from being the case. In the Kootenai national forest It is estimated that the cost of clearing land of stumps amounts to from $50 to $75 per acre. When the stumps are from ten to fifteen years old this figure Is somewhat less but It Is safe to say that under the most favorable conditions the cost will exceed $80 per acre. The larger the stumps the greater the cost.
