If this were a strictly personal account of my life, with the history of baseball in America left out, I might dodge some of the disagreeable things that now and then got sandwiched in between the almost constant smooth sailing that fell to my lot as manager of the banner team of baseball artists in America. One of the things I might escape would be the necessity at explaining to you how it happened that I let Boston get away with the pennant in 1883.
