To be frank with you, it has always been more or less of a mystery to me. The only change in our personnel was the substitution of Fred Pfeffer for Joe Quest at second base, and that should have meant additional strength for us. That it didn't turn out that way was no fault of the new man, for he proved himself to be a crackerjack. It is possible that overconfldence may have had something to do with our slump, although we must have been onto the fact that our opponents were after us hot and heavy. From the start it was plain enough that the contest was going to be a battle of the giants and that Chicago, Boston, Providence and Cleveland were the only ones In it. Excitement ran high all over the country and the big newspapers began to devote considerable space to our dally doings on the diamond.
