Until about that time baseball had not figured very prominently in the press. Recently on looking over the files of a big New York daily for the year 1880 I was surprised to find so little mention of the game. There was no account of any game played outside New York and Brooklyn, and even those were given very little space—not a third as much as was ta^ ken up by pigeon shooting. In October of that year the Chicagos played with the Metropolitans, and the report of the game does not cover more than three inches. One of the statements in it amused me a whole lot. It was to the effect that when the score stood 4 to 0 in favor of my team we put on our coats and quit, with the excuse that we had to catch a train. I don't recollect anything of the sort. But if
