School Begins
Rappahannock County High School began the 1953-54 session last Thursday according to schedule and in spite of sizzling heat. New teachers are Mrs. Arlene Wake, Washington, third grade; in the high school department, Miss Jean Brown, Sperryville; Miss Emma Lee McArthur, Greenville, N. C.; James Bettendorf, Lanham, Md.; Alvin Barker, Greenville, S. C., and Fred Hutcherson. Other high school teachers returning for the present session are Mrs. Fisher Burford, Mrs. Mary Hart Winfrey, Mrs. Hazel Corbin, Mrs. Paul Nichols, Mrs. C. B. Johnson, Nick Cascio and H. B. Winfrey. In charge of the first and third grades are Miss Mary Jenkins and Mrs. Jessie Cox.
Enrollment on the first day was as folows: 1st grade, 26; second grade, 32; third grade, 31; In the high school in the eighth grade, 84; ninth, 75; tenth, 40; eleventh, 53 and twelfth 30. Total enrollment of whom 282 are in the high school, an increase of forty pupils in the high school enrollment over the same period last year. These' figures are further proof of what many people already know; that whatever the total school enrollment for the county may be, the high school s more crowded than ever. Classrooms in the nearly fifty year-old building were designed for twentyfour to twenty-eight pupils. In several
