With school opening, the old, old subject comes up again: “the kids aren't taught; everything is soft"
A visiting print-shop philosopher answered that one well the other day. The conversation had run along the usual lines: children did not study any more-; they played most of the day; we are raising a sissy generation; etc., etc. After a few minutes of such raving, the conversation switched: “oh no, the present day hyper-tension is makchildren tough; they grow up too young." Through the conservation the philosopher sat. Finally he spoke, “H—!” he said, “There isn’t a one in the crowd, past generation or present, who could have survived the winter of 1620 at Plymouth or 1607 at Jamestown!”
Another topic of conversation began immediately thereafter.
