to be a major enterprise for Red Cross chapters. Seventyrfive chapters in Virginia are participating in the Blood Program. Last year 55,731 pints of blood were transfused to the citizens hospitalized in Virginia and an undetermined number <Jf additional pints were provided for Virginia, citizens hospitalized in the District of' Columbia and other localities outside of the state.

One of the most important services of the Red Cross is preparing youth, the leaders of tomorrow, for responsible citizenship. Through the Junior Red Cross, 452,320 students in 1,424 elementary and high schools in Virginia are conducting their own programs of service to <he community, schools, military and veterans hospitals. They are promoting friendship and understanding in the young people of other lands by exchanging letters, gift boxes, school art and music. In addition, the Junior Red Cross members plan an important part in the adult chapter programs.

Due to the large number of drowning* and accidents each year, it is exceedingly important for the .public to be trained in first aid and water safety techniques. Many of the chapters within our state gave major attention to this.training. A total of 6,953 youngsters participated in the annual “Learn To Swim Program” in Virginia which enjoys the cooperation and support of the State. Department of Education. Chapters also issued life saving certificates to 2,371 persons. In first aid classes, 14,548 persons learned what to do when accidents occur and 1,867 women received training in home care of the sick.
