She has come a long way since then. Her goal—to quilt an allwhite linen bedspread. She feels that with another few years and another few quilts experience behind iier, she may be ready to tackle that task.
Quilting crept up rather gradually on the family, tucked in with other hobbies, like knitting, gardening, and interior, decorating. Miss Bowie believes members of her family began by noticing quilts at county auctions. Soon they started collecting—■ quilts, books on quilting, and the necessary equipment to become quilters themselves.
Bach quilt they make is a rel work of art requiring infinite patience for the long painstaking process of putting it together. First it must be designed, then | pieced, then quilted on a large wooden frfcme. Finally, hand-make fringe may be added as a finishing touch.
Miss Bowie estimated that one of her quilts had taken 1400 hours for the stitching alone.
Miss Bowie has no idea how many quilts she and her aunt and late mother have made in all. A
