had started out teaching school, was the late Judge George L. Browning of the Virginia Supreme Court. Judge Browning was born and grew up at “Greenfield” and told many interesting and delightful stories about the County and his experiences as a teacher at the old Academy. He had a wonderful time reminiscing with an old pupil of his, whom he chanced to meet on the street. He was reminded of the fact that lve hadn’t “spared the rod” and replied, (in a fatherly manner and with a -fatherly pat, for which he was famous) “But you see I didn’t spoil the child."
Mr. and Mrs. Dow, “who came from the North” were the teachers at the Academy when thfc War started. Miss Annie Powers whose father “knew Thomas Jefferson well” and loved to talk about it, was one of their pupils. She was very fond of them and said they Were much loved by the people pf the community for their loyalty to their neighbors when the “Yankees" were in town. After the War the Academy was not «nly used as a school buildirfg, but became quite a “community center”. A flourishing Literary Society and Debating Society held their weekly meetings there. Some of the minutes of the meetings were found by the late Mrs. Rosa Bishop in the old “Nicol House” when she bought the property some years ago. The meetings were well attended and there was much enthusiasm. The late Miss Sallie Strother, aunt of Miss Belle Strother, who visits here frequently, told of attending one of the meetings when they discussed Shakespeare’s Plays! Il ' 1..
