One of the men in this area who is on the Temporary Disa-. bility Retired List of the Army recently received orders to report to a military' post for a physical examination. Since he had elected to receive VA compensation instead of disability retired pay, he did not want ot lose time from his job for the 3 days of examination and travel time involved. His thought was that since he was uned juris- * diction of the VA he was no longer required to take the periodic examinations as directed by the Army.
If a veterap is retired for disabilities obviously permanent and ratable at 30% or more he is placed on the permanently retired rolls. If. however, his disabilities are such that they may imprrfve, he goes on the Temporary Disability Retired List, subject to recall for a physical examination by the Army at intervals of 18 months / for 5 years, and he must report as directed regardless of his having riven up retirement pay in favor of VA compensation. During the 5 year period he may be permentlv retired on any examination which show's no improvement.
Army retired personnel are still under Army control in some resnects. Failure to respond to orders for examination without satisfactory cause can result in loss of retire#! tn privileges. • - \
