Now how does this figure? With a 20% nitrogen fertilizer selling at $58,00 .per ton and orchard grass costing 38c per pound for every pound of nitrogen you buy at present prices you get about 3 pounds more seed and 35 pounds more hay. In other words for every 14%c you spend for nitrogen you get back $1.14 worth of orchard grass seed.

The important thing to do next month or early in March is to get the nitrogen; or die nitrogen phosphorus, and potash on the land. By doing so you’ll get the three way flexibility; either have earlier grazing make a good seed yield or be insured of a greater hay crop.

If you are interested only in earlier grazing or hay, then the result summary of the Orange data dictates 400 lbs. of 2-12-12 and 200 lbs. of 20% nitrogen material or 500 lbs. of a 5-10-10 and 125 lbs. of 20% N or better yet about 500 lbs. of a 10-10-10 so you’ll not have to come back with additional nitrogen. If you’re figuring on widening your possibilities of income or just plain know you want to produce seed then put on 250 lbs. of 20% nitrogen in addition to vour 10-10-10.
