In 1949, the first large-scale experiments with liquid nitrogen fertilizer were conducted in Indiana, under supervision of Purdue University scientists. They were so successful that, today balanced ferilizers can be applied to lawns, and gardens, in a soluable form, any time in spring, summer of fall.
The job has been made easy by the development of the new lawn hose-spraver attachment, known as Carac. The 1957 Carac sprayer can apply enough balanced lawn fertilizer to cover 2,000 square feet (40x50) in a few minutes. The new sprayer covers a larger area from one position than previous models —a 30 foot spray pattern. It does not clog, and it has been equipped with a chrome handle that cuts down on wrist fatigue.
The main objective of soluable fertilizer treatment of lawns is dense growth of grass to fill in bare spots and crowd out broad-x leaf weeds and craberass before they reach “pulling” size. In northern and temperate climates, such as the New England and Middle Atlantic States desirable lawn grass sprouts earlier in the season than weeds or crabgrass, and the sooner this grass gets a start with the help of fertilizer
