Johnson Chapter of the George Washington Carver Regional High School was rated the nunibcr one chapter among 58 NFA Chapters throughout the state. The criteria used in evaluating chapters were based on the participation in all of the activities on the local, federation and state levels. The ■ activities were as follows: public speaking, talent, quartette, NFA quiz, soil and water management. farm and home improvement. farm electrification, dairy farming, farm mechanics, modern farmers, superior farmers, H. D. Sargent award, judging teams, offices held, newspaper articles published. radio programs sponsored, ■state NFA dues. NFA camp dues, delegates attending the State Convention. attendance at the State Convenion sessions, NFA camp attendance, and active farming programs. Of this number we participated in all with the exception of the H. O. Sargent Award. - When the State Convention convened on June 11. we were there with eighteen members from our chapter. This number represented the largest delegation of the s8 chapters present. However, this qnantitv wasn’t taken for the sake of a large number, for each bov had a specific duty to perform. The following hots were honored at the State Convention; Fugene Ferguson was elected to the Superior Fanner Degree and re' ceived *100.00; William Carter won first Place in Soil and Water Management and received Lawrence Wilhoite won first place in Farm and Home Improvement and received $50.00: Arthur Ferguson won first place m Dairv Farming and received S^O.OO. ! Robert Turner won first place m Farm Mechanics and received and John Strother won second place" in Farm Electrification and received S2s.
The Modern Farmer Degree, the third highest degree that can be attained bv an NFA member, was bestowed upon six of our members. The recipients of this degree received a charming gold NFA kev. Thev are: William Carter. Leslie Daniels. William Porter. Ernest Dinkins. Deforest Erve. and Robert Turner.
Being elected to an office in the Virginia Association of New Farmers of America is an honor. Arthur Jones, the out-going president was a member of our chapter. He exhibited outstanding leadership, abilitv. and his splendid method of conducting meetings gained him high recognition from the 2/»00 XFA members throughout the state. This year William Carter was elected to the offwe of .State Reporter.
