As part of the Jamestown Celebration activities, a service of the Holy Communion will be held at. 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 7 at the altar marking the site of the first Colonial Episcopal Church in Hromfield Parish. This altar is located on the farm of Mr. Clive Ramey at Slate Mills and is easily accessible from the road.
According to the records, interest in the site of this old Church was revived in 1925 by The Rev. Dr. K. J. Hammond, Rector of Sr. Stephen’s Church in Culpeper. Hearing of a traditional site of a Church near Slate Mills, he visited the location and found many of the old foundation bricks and bats attered in the field where the hurch Had stood. An investigaion showed that a brick Church ad been built on that spot in 1754 kVith funds supplied by the Church f England. The Rev. Adam
en/.ies was its first priest. The hurch was in general use from that time until 1812 when it was torn down in an outbreak of antiEnel ish feeling.
