Forest Camp At
Holiday Lake
Maurice Butler of Boston, Va., and Guy Standish of Castleton, Va., in recognition of their teen interest in forestry, wildlife, and general conservation of our natural resources, have been selected by the State Forester to attend the 1957 Forestry' Camp at Holiday Lake on the Appomattox Buckingham State Forest from June 24 to June 29, 1957. ' These Rappahannock C o u n t y boys will be part of a group of some 100 boys selected from various parts of the State of Virginia who will undergo a week of forestry training, without charge, at Holiday Lake. The camp, which is administered by the Virginia Division of Forestry., is intended to interest and instruct Virginia boys in sound forestry and conservation principles and is sponsored by the Southern Pulpwood Conservation Association. It is financed by the following Virginia industries: Union Bag-Camp Paper 1 Corporation, Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia, Continental Can Company. The Glatfelter Pulpwood Company, The Mead Corporation, National Container Corporation of Virginia and the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. Classes will be taught by trained foresters and will include such subjects as timber harvesting, fire control, timber cruising and estimating, game management, area surveying, tree planting and tree identification. There will be plenty of time however, for recreation and athletics which will inrlude swimming, baseball, volley ball, horseshoe pitching and evening camp fire programs. Vesper services are held nightly with the boys taking part in the program. Lessons learned, friends made and the good times had at Holiday Lake are not soon forgotten andmany a camper has regretted that he is ineligible for a second trip to camp. The - campers from Rappahannock County' were recommended to the State Forester by Chief Forester Warden Raymond Johnson and Mr. Robert Leonard.
