Town Council to repair roads and bridges, drill a well, and build and equip a clinic. Senator Harry F. Byrd and other government officials cooperated in clearing the way for Dr. Kato to enter the United States.
Dr. Kato was welcomed on the island by the ringing of church bells and an enthusiastic and happy line of Tangiermen on the shore, including Mr. Rishel. Dr. Kato was accompanied to the island by Mr. Fisher and reporters, photographers, and magazine writers.
The modern and well equipped clinic was dedicated April 28. The Town Council put up $6,000 and the citizens contributed about' $6,000 of the total cost of $25,500 for the clinic and its equipment. The Richmond Surgical Supply Company, by making the equipment available at cost, contributed some $3,000 to make it possible for Tangier to have the best equipment of its kind in Virginia.
Tangier has other needs, including dental service, better telephone service, better roads and safer bridges, garbage, trash and sewage disposal, mosquito control, and a processing plant to provide work for women.
The Tangier story is only one of many similar projects which have brought good medical care to many parts of Virginia, Mr. Fisher pointed out.
