Fed cattle price prospects look pretty good at least until the and of March.
There are a lot more catdp on feed, but these make up only about 40 to 45 percent of total slaughter. Slaughter of cows aand calves, which make up most of the balance is expected to be down.
Balancing; one against the other, total slaughter in the first part of the year should be' pretty close to last year’s level at the same time.
With the ecooomy on. the upswing, fed cattle prices may level off some by March, but no material decline is indicated.
Weight breakdowns of the cattle now on feed indicate earlier marketings and probablv heavier weights, with ample com supplies in the principal feeding states.
If you have cattle on feed, it looks like a good idea to give them all they will eat. It won’t cost you any more feed in the long rtn, because they will put on finish quicker. 'v
And plan to sell at least by the end of March, shooting for low choice grade in finished animals.
Fed cattle prices were up 50 cents to a dollar in Chicago last week, with a top of $31.25 choice and prime at $27.50 tot $30.50 and good cattle at $26 to $28.
Virginia auctions were up about 25 cents with choice steers bringing $27 to $28.25 and good steers $25 to $27.
Virginia usually lags b e hi n d Chicago which should mean a little higher Virginia prices this week.
HOGS
Look for a drop of 75c to $1 in the general price pattern of hogs between now and the end o f March. You may expect week to week fluctuations in hog prices but prices will cpntinue their usual seasonal downward trend.
