During the ttftcen year f™. 1940-55, Rappahannock’s cattle population has increased 40% as compared to the state-wide increase of 67% during! the same period. ,vliiiwuF-count* this, increase has been essentially in heef cows: in fact the increase is a phenomenal 311 % ; or from 1419 head in 1940 to 5886 head in 19551 The remairting increase has been in replacement heifers and bulk as the milk cow population in 1955 was at its lowest during th.s period although not significantly lower than 1940. From 1945 to 1955 our milk cow population dropped 33%. It is felt this increase in beef cows was the result of; increased feed production as a result of improved cultural practices, and especially an inditing market. Also it was apparent that the increase in herd number* as well as size of cow herds leveled off during 1956 and 1957. During 1958 there appeared to be an increase in the number of replacement heifers being kept as evide nced by the marked increase in Bang’s vaccinations. This increase is hot expected to increase the total cow population, but rather will ( end to lower tire average age per cow Within herds which had grown older during periods of peak heifer prices at feeder calf sales.
