NEW CORN HYBRID Last spring a sample of V.P.'I. 639 seed com was sent us for field testing by a fanner. This sample was turned over to Mr. I. L. Parrish of Viewtown who planted the com on a contour strip along with Todd’s hybrid no. 635. On November 6th we checked a 100 ft. row (selected at random) of each corn variety. Results: V.PjI. 639 had 100% standability while Todd’s 635 showed 38% stalk breakage below the ear and 10% fewer stalks per 100 jft. row. When new varities of field crops prove promising qn experiment station levels, seed |is distributed all over die state to check its ability and quality on farm levels before the seed is released on the general market. It will be interesting to learn results of farm tests of V.PA 639 elsewhere in Virginia.
