Lysippus, another of the three, had a long and very active life. His working career was dated somewhere between 366 and 316 B. C. It is recorded that he, himself, said that "while others had made men as they are, he had.made them as they appeared to the eye.” By doing so he tended to create a type, with a body which was more slender and a head which was smaller than the usual heretofore. Plutarch states that Alexander the Great preferred Lysippus before all other portraitists because Lysippus “displayed his character” while others “lost his virile and leonine aspect.”
