You 4-H Club members with farm flock projects: how would you like shearing sheep for $90.00 a head? That is just what two Rappahannock boys plus twentyodd others will be doing Saturday, September! 2.
Who? Harrison Powers and Glen Updike.
Where? Indiana State Fair at Indianapolis.
Why? It is the National 4-H Sheep Shearing Contest sponsored by the Sunbeam Corporation.
Each contestant, probably from 20-22 states will be competing for first place which carries a prize of a $400 scholarship plus $50 cash. Each contestant will shear five sheep; two in preliminaries and three in the finals. Yes, there are other prizes but Harrison and Glery always shoot for top awards!
That is why they have been shearing all week for free. Getting practice, toughening up muscles, polishing up on the shearing positions, learning ways to improve speed.
All week anyone around Charlie Funkhouser’s barn during the day might have heard: “Get ready, get set, Go,” followed in a few minutes by the shearers calling “time” as he completed each sheep.
