Attends Forestry
Training Camp
Harrison Powers of Amissville has just returned from a week of forestry training at the Jamestown 4-H Camp. He is the first Rappahannock 4-H member to attend the 4-H Forestry Camp, the first of its kind in Virginia. The tamp was sponsored by the VPI Agricultural Extension Service and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia.
At the camp 65 boys from 29 Virginia counties learned the methods of starting new forests, managing them during their growing period and harvesting. them when ready to cut. In addition, classes were held in tree and log measurements. Field trips to a local paper mill, a sawmill and several tree farms were a part of the instruction.
The boys learned how to handle power saws safely. Each boy was given individual training by Bill Clarke of the Homelite Company who also gave demonstrations of the tricks an expert can do with power saws.
A highlight of the program was a demonstration of the new farm interphone system of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia. After a pole had been set in a matter of minutes by the company linemen, a loud speaker was hooked up as it would be on a farm. As a surprise feature ' one of the campers received an incoming call from his parents. The last day was contest day with many tests of forestry skills and knowledge. Awards and certificates of completion were given out at. the concluding program by Thomas Cutler, Williamsburg District Business Manager of the telephone company.
