700,000th Telephone
The telephone system of Western Power & Gas Company, Inc. and Subsidiaries, which constitutes the nation's third largest Independent Telephone System with operations in 10 states, Installed its 700,000th telephone on September 20, 1966, The Installation symbolic of this milestone was made by Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company In the new Twin Oaks Convalescing Home on U. S. 501 in South Boston. Tracing the growth of the Westgas telephone system over the past 10 years, Division Manager, D. H. Reid said the total number of telephones served by the System is about 2-1/2 times the total served in 1956. The Investment in telephone facilities has increased from about $70 million to more than $313 million today. The Virginia Division presently serves approximately 87,750 telephones, 407 of which are in the Washington Virginia exchange, and has experienced continued growth, increasing from 40,340 stations in 1956, a gain of 118 per cent. The floor of the world’s oceans is covered with deep mud, from 200 feet deep to several miles.
