If I had to select only one simple step that a person can take to help solve some financial problem, I would set up an emergency fund for sinking or swimming.
A family can be sailing smoothly along from one pay check to the next without much difficulty. Then an unexpected expense, even a small one, causes these same bills to lag or ever others to go unpaid. Bills begin to pile up and the downward spiral begins until the family finds itself with a real financial problem.
A person swimming in deep water and yelling for help needs only a life preserver at the right time to save his life. A life preserver in the form of an emergency fund could have saved the family from the first downward step on the spiral.
