Number 2 Injuries, Damages Minor in Crashes A number of traffic incidents have occurred and been reported in the past week with injury and damages slight. On Friday afternoon, December 12, two cars were involved in a crash on the parking lot at the Rappahannock Manufacturing plant near Flint Hill. Gertrude Cameron of Chester Gap, operating a 65 Pontiac coupe, struck the side of a 65 Chevrolet station wagon operated by Frances Ann Brown of Front Royal. There were no injuries and damage was estimated at $75 to the Brown car. No charges were made by Trooper W.A. Buntin who investigated. In the evening Friday at approximately 7:55 p.m. in Sperryville two vehicles collided and one failed to stop at the scene. Edward Dewayne Chapman of Portsmouth in a 70 Plymouth pulled onto the highway from a service station and struck the side of a 70 Maverick operated by Danny Joe Craft of Anderson, W. Va. Chapman failed to stop at the scene and was later apprehended and charged with hit and run property damage. According to Trooper Buntin, damage was estimated at $150 and $75 to the Craft car and Chapman car, respectively. On the 14 th at 6 p.m. at Huntly a 55 Dodge apparently stalled on the road and was being pushed on Route 522 when it was struck by another vehicle. Samuel Bud Wines of Chester Gap driving a 62 Chevrolet struck the Dodge which was registered to James Williams of Amissville. The Dodge was declared a total loss arid damage to the Wines car was estimated at $350. According to Trooper Buntin the investigation is continuing and charges pending. Rappk. Rescue and Washington VFD Elect Officers At a meeting of the Washington Volunteer Fire Company and Rappahannock Rescue Squad held Monday, December 8 at the Fire House the following officers were elected: President, George (Billy) Alther; Vice-President, Jonas Alther; Secretary and Treasurer, re-elected, Bertha M. Armel; Fire Chief, Ennis Jenkins; ^Ass’t Fire Chief, Bruce Critzer; Engineers, Harold Estes and Steve Bailey; Additional Directors, William Hargett and Harold Estes; Captain of Rescue Squad, Harold Estes. Mrs. Bertha Armel was named Life-long Honorary Captain of Rescue Squad. ! Christmas Programs, Church Notices Worship Service at the Washington United Methodist Church will be held Sunday, December 21 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Jerry Campbell, minister. There will be no 11 o’clock service at the Sperryville Methodist Church on Sunday, December 21. The Christmas program will be presented there December 21 at 7:30 p.m. The Chester Gap Baptist Church will have its Christmas Program on Sunday night, December 21 beginning at 7:30. The public is cordially invited. Sperryville United Methodist Church will present the heart-warming Christmas story of “Why the Chimes Rang” on Sunday, December 21 at 7:30 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend. A Christmas cantata “Wondrous Love” will be presented December 21 at 6 p.m. at the Flint Hill Methodist Church by members of the choir, under the direction of Mrs. W. K. Harris, organist. The public is cordially invited. The Chester Gap Baptist Church will have a candlelight service on Wednesday, December 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington will have a joint Sunday School and Morning Worship Service Sunday, December 21 at 10:30 a.m. Following Baptism a Christmas Pageant will be presented. After service^all will go to the parish hall to decorate the Christmas tree. Coffee and dessert will be provided; everyone is asked to bring a sandwich. The Christmas Eve Service of Holy Communion at Trinity Episcopal Church will begin at 11:30 p.m. There will be no 8:00 a.m. Holy Communion Service on Sunday, December 28th. The Assembly of God, Sperryville will present a Christmas Program “The Meaning of Christmas” in the church on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. Miss Reba K. Pound who recently returned from the Holy Land will be the guest speaker and will show slides. The public is invited to attend. The Amissville Baptist Sunday School will present a Christmas i program at the church on Sunday 'evening, December 21 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Wool Marketing Year Ends Dec. 31 Wool producers were reminded today by H. S. Barksdale, Chairman of the Rappahannock County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) Committee that the 1969 marketing year under the wool and mohair program ends December 31. Payments for the current marketing year - 1969 - are based only on marketings completed during the year. Marketings completed after December 31, 1969, will be in the 1970 marketing year and not eligible for payments until early 1971. Mr. Barksdale urged producers to be sure all 1969 sales details are completed by the end of the year, including passing title to the buyer, delivery of the wool or mohair to the buyer either actually or through documents transferring control to the buyer, and having available all information necessary to determine the buyer’s total purchase price. Requests for 1969 marketing year payments under the National Wool Act may be filed with the Rappahannock County ASCS Office at any time. Payments for the 1969 Cadette Group Reports Activities Ten girls of the Rappahannock Cadettes completed their First Aid badge under the instruction of Eddie Clark of Flint Hill. This led to the following girls accepting and passing the Challenge of Emergency Preparedness: Gina Brown, Drucilla Davis, Mauri Raney, Mary Moore Kilby, Nanette Butler, Casskndra Frye, Darlene Jett and Wendy Brown. -L The entire troop has made a study of Citizenship and World Heritage. They have decided to adopt a foreign baby as a part of their service. Any ideas and help or financial aid would be appreciated. The Troop has accepted the Challenge of Active Citizenship and in order to pass this they will be interviewing some of the outstanding residents of Rappahannock County. At the troop meeting Monday, a Christmas party followed the program which consisted in part of a film strip. Games and refreshments concluded the party and this completes activities of the group for this year. Meetings will resume on January 5. marketing year are expected to begin in April, 1970. Christmas Program At Elementary Sch. The public is cordially invited to attend the Christmas program at the Rappahannock County Elementary School on Friday, December 19, at 9:30 a.m. Every child in grades 1 through 7 participates in the program which is under the direction of Mrs. Blauvelt, the music director for the county schools. Killing and checking deer in Rappahannock County during the past week were Charles Taylor of Falls Church with a 5 pointer, Larry Shenk of Luray, a 2 pointer and Dexter Lowery of Luray, an 8 pointer, all checked at Sperryville by F. D. Coffey. Checked by Clarence Baldwin at Washington were deer taken by Lottie Moss of Castleton, a 5 point rack, David Pullen of Washington, who has now completed a grand-slam on Virginia big game in one season by taking a 10 point buck after earlier getting a bear, and Richard Beaver of Vienna checked an 8 pointer at Baldwin’s. Dorsey Rohrbaugh of Fairfax checked a 7 pointer at Jenkins Esso in Amissville. Two deer were checked at Bradford’s Store in Flint Hill, an 8 pointer taken by Francis Smedley of Browntown and Buddy Caldwell, a 5 point buck. The second bear of the season was checked at Baldwin’s Grocery. That one taken by John M. Clark, jr. Rappahannock deer kill now stands at 120 for the season with| about 3 more weeks to go. Early I reports indicate that deer hunters in counties west of the Blue Ridge killed a greater number of! deer this than last. Also huntersj are expected to break last year’s: all-time record for number of| turkey’s killed in those Western! counties. Die-hard dove hunters may again take to the field. The season is in again and will continue J through Saturday, December 27; shooting times are still from 121 noon until sunset. Sunset this | Saturday is 4:58 p.m., and on thej 27th it will be 5:02. It’s hard to I believe that daylight hours will I soon be getting longer. More time I to hunt and fish. Trout fisherman have the rest of this month to try for those Brooks, Rainbows and Browns that might be left. The season closes December 31. This Saturday, December 20, is the last day of turkey season both east and west of the Blue Ridge Bear season runs only until December 31, 1969. The members of the Future Homemakers Club at RCHS have made stuffed toys which will be given to patients in the childrens wards at the University of Virginia Hospital for Christmas. The toys were delivered to the hospital Tuesday and pictured here as they prepared to leave for Charlottesville are club members Charlotte Irintz, Martha Lou O'Bannon, Miss Jane Coleman, Home Ec Instructor, Patsy Payne and Brenda Jett. More than thirty club members helped with the project. The Rappahannock Lions Club honored its ladies with the annual Ladies Night dinner meeting last Wednesday evening. Supervisors Special Meeting Friday On Water and Sewerage Control A special meeting of the Rappahannock Hoard ofi I Supervisors is scheduled for 'tomorrow morning, Friday,! Virginia Dear Mrs. Latham: For the past two months I have noticed the county trash receptacles in Flint Hill and Sperryville overflowing with their contents. We all know that trash breeds rats and with them, disease. Maybe soon a heavy snow will come and cover the mess, then, at least, we won't have to be ashamed during the winter. Hawkins, Jr. OBITUARIES Mrs. Elizabeth Cloud Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cloud of Flint Hill died December 10, 1969 at Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal. She was 77, the wife of Clarence W. Cloud who survives her. Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Clarice Lillard, Flint Hill, Mrs. Mazie Montgomery, Orange, Calif., Mrs. Hilma Walker, Oxon Hill, Md., Mrs. Lois Sours, Warrenton; three sons, Nelson Cloud of Arlington and Ellis Cloud and Leon Cloud, both of Washington, D. C. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Annie Scott, Castleton; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Saturday at the Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton, with the Rev. Jerry Campbell officiating. Interment was in Warrenton Cemetery. In Psalms 50:10 we find these words “Every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.” We find no argument with that statement, we will concede that all the world, all the hills, all the flora and fauna that occupy those hills belong to God. I’ve probably seen at least a million cattle on more than a thousand hills. It is a thrilling sight, especially when they are grazing on the skyline. Yes, everything has its value in the scheme of things, more or less, according to situations and the manifestation of individual things. Let’s look at the other side of the coin. Those very cattle you admired on the hill in the afternoon can seem like demons from the nether regions at night. You top a ridge and there in your headlights are cows on your side of the road - will your brakes hold, will they come further out into the road. God is good. Won’t you to whom He has intrusted cows be good and keep them off the highways, PLEASE. The next family might not be as lucky.
