Ham and muscling were disregarded. These fence rail long hogs were later jokingly referred to as the meatless wonders. Out of the confusion there finally evolved the modern meat type hog. Today, continued emphasis is placed on litter weight weaned, rate of growth, pounds of feed required to make a pound of gain and as an end product; a long, trim, heavy muscled, high yielding market hog.
Could be this is what is happening to the beef industry. We have been moving in this direction for a long time. Maybe it just took some big white cattle to provide the competition and speed up the change.
One thing for sure, we don’t need any more short, compact, early maturing bulls in Rappahannock. We already have our share.
