THE FOURTH OF JULY holiday just past is a traditional time for Americans to take stock of all the things that make it worthwhile to be an American. Thanksgiving is another. People count their blessings and conclude that they’re fortunate to have been born under the stars and stripes.
And then the editorialists always add a reminder that good fortune isn’t enough, that America didn’t just happen, and that good things won’t necessarily follow — without active, concerned citizens taking an active interest in how their country is run, for them and their children.
All familiar stuff, to be sure. But We wonder if people ever really appreciate the down-to-earth, purely local application of the airy, patriotic generalizations? Do people enjoying the way of life offered by Rappahannock County, for example, « really understand why Rappahannock is what it is, and what it will take to keep life pleasant and enjoyable here, for them and their children.
