9 THERE ARE advantages to be gained by growing the smaller apple tree. As these plantings conform to the hedge row system of training they will ultimately give earlier age tree production per acre. This means greater overall efficiency in the orchard operation. In fact, the smaller growing tree is in itself more efficient.
More fruit can be produced per pound of tree growth on the semi-dwarf trees than on standard apple trees. Experience has shown that these smaller than standard trees will produce apples of more uniform size and sustain uniform production per acre, the specialist said.
