FAT CATTLE PRICES are near their peak, but with the strong demand for meat and the relatively small pork and broiler supply, any weakness in the market would likely be limited.

Starting with February, slaughter has remained behind 1972. The first four months of this year slaughter was down 4 per cent, Federally inspected slaughter in May was off 5 per cent, and in the first half of June was down 9 per cent. \?old storage holdings as of June 1 were at 340 million pounds — 23 per cent above a year ago. Also as of June 1, cattle on feed in the seven major reporting states was set at 9,455,000 head — 4 per cent above that period last year.

The slaughter cattle market last Thursday in Omaha closed with choice steers bringing $46.50 - $47.75; mixed good and choice steers, $45.50 - $46.25; choice heifers, $45.00 - 46.50; and mixed good and choice heifers, $44.00 - $46.25. Cattle prices at Virginia auctions last week were as follows: good steers, $41.50 - $46.50; standard steers, $38.00 - $43.50; good heifers, $38.00 - $44.60; and standard heifers, $34.00 - $40.00.
