WHILE OUR primary goal should be the complete elimination of our one major source of water pollution — the dumping of raw sewage into our streams and rivers — we should not lose sight of the cumulative effect of cleaning up hundreds of small sources of water pollution wherever they exist. These not only foul the local landscape, but they create health and safety hazzards over a wide area.
The EPA in its booklet “What YOU can do about water pollution” offers the following simple rule of thumb for farmers large and small: Manage your land so that nothing washes away when the rains come or the snows melt.
Most pollution from land can be controlled or prevented now, if every citizen makes a personal commitment to maintain a litter free environment. □
