READERS OF THE NEWS, and of its sister publication, the Piedmont Virginian, know what the editors think makes life worthwhile in Rappahannock, and throughout this particularly beautiful part of the North American continent. A landscape shaped by generations of jrien living on and with the land; towns mellowed by decades of neighborliness and civic concern; majestic mountains unscarred by incompatible use. c We think we know what it isn’t, too — it isn’t something compounded of tidky-tacky subdivisions, silted streams, clogged highways, overcrowded schools and rising tax rates. To us, it seems obvious that you can’t preserve a beautiful, desirable way of life while at the same time trying to make accommodations for every super-developer, weekend vacationer and wholesale speculator who was attracted to Rappahannock in the first place precisely because it wasn’t all of the things listed above.
So, let us pause on the Fourth of July and on all appropriate occasions to think about what we hold dear and what special blessings are ours — and think in specific terms, too, and not just airy generalizations. □
