DELEGATE French Slaughter has the right idea: Don’t raise state taxes, economize on state expenditures.
And we would add: Don’t cut essential services, either, such as aid to education and benefit programs; do it by cutting down on expenses and by controlling what seems to be a runaway bureaucratic growth rate.
A recent report revealed the startling information that Virginia has the highest ratio of state employes per taxpayer of any state in the union. When it is remembered that Virginia doesn’t rank all that high on state benefits to taxpayers, it is obvious that something is drastically wrong.
A trip to Richmond does nothing to dispel doubts. State office buildings sprawl all over the city. Some departments fill entire high-rise structures.
It is popular to point a finger at the federal government when complaining about high taxes, but state and local taxes have been rising at a faster rate than the federal ‘ ‘take’ ’ for some time now. It’s time to take stock, and do something.
