Millions of jobs waiting for you in coming years The jobs of .the future are being spawned now from changes in the population, labor force, and the demand for goods and services, according to the U.S. Labor Department. Population ultimately limits the size of the labor force — individuals working or looking for work — which constrains how much can be produced. Demand for various goods and services determines employment in the industries providing them. Occupational employment opportunities, in turn, result from demand for skills needed within specific industries. Demand for medical assistants and other health-care occupations, for example, have surged in response to rapid growth in demand for health services. Population trends affect employment opportunities in a number of ways. Changes in population influence the demand for goods and services. For example, a growing and aging population has increased the demand for health services. Equally important, population changes produce corresponding changes in the size and demographic composition of the labor force. The U.S. population is expected to increase by 24 million by 2012. The effects of population growth on various occupations will differ. The youth population, ages 16 to 24, will grow 7 percent. As the baby boomers continue to age, the group ages 55 to 64 will increase by 43.6 percent, more than any other group. The 35- to 44-year-old group will decrease. ropulation is the single most important factor in determining the size and composition of the labor force — that is, people who are either working or looking for work. Total employment is expected to increase from 144 million in 2002 to 165 million in 2012, or by 14.8 percent. The 21 million jobs that will be added by 2012 will not be evenly distributed across major occupational groups. Changes in consumer demand, technology, and many other factors will contribute to the continually changing employment structure in the U.S. economy. A look at the sectors: • Service industries: Expected to account for approximately 20.8 million new wage and salary jobs by 2012. • Education and health services: This industry supersector is projected to grow faster, 31.8 per cent, and add more jobs than any other industry sector. Growth in health care and social assistance — including private hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and individual and family services - will be driven by an aging population and longer life expectancies. Also, as more women enter the labor force, demand for child-care services is expected to grow. * Private educational services: Rising student enrollments at all levels of education will create demand for educational services. * Professional and business services: This group will grow by 30.4 percent and add nearly 5 million new jobs. * Administrative and support: The fastest-growing industry in this sector will be employment services, which will grow by 54.3 percent and will contribute almost two-thirds of all new jobs in administrative and support and waste management and remediation services. • Professional, scientific, technical services: Growth is pegged at 1.9 million new jobs by 2012. Growth will be driven by the increasing reliance of businesses on information technology and the continuing importance of maintaining system and network security. Management, scientific and technical consulting services also will grow rapidly, spurred by the increased use of new technology and computer software, and the growing complexity of business. • Management: Expect 195,000 new jobs by 2012. • Information: Some 632,000 jobs will be added by 2012. Information contains some of the fast-growing computer-related industries such as software publishers; Internet publishing and broadcasting; and Internet service providers, Web search portals and data processing services. Jobs in telecommunications will surge because of demand for residential and business land-line and wireless services, cable service, high-speed Internet connections, and software will fuel job growth among these industries. • Leisure and hospitality: Overall employment will grow by 497,000 jobs. Most of these will See JOBS, Page 4 Medical assistants Network systems and data communicationsanalysts Physician assistants Social and hu nan service assistants Home health aides Medical records and health information technicians Physical therapist aides Computer software engineers, systems software, applications Physical therapist assistance Fitness trainers and aerobics instructors Database administrators Veterinary technologist and technicians Hazardous materials removal workers Dental hygienists Occupational therapist aides Dental assistants Personal and home care aides Self-enrichment education teachers Computer systems analysts Ttmes-Mtmx Graphic/Damie Malone Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics These jobs are growing Health-care careers dominate the fastestgrowing careers through 2012. JOBS From Page 3 come from the amusement, gambling and recreation sector. Job growth will stem from public participation in arts, entertainment and recreation activities — reflecting increasing incomes, leisure time and awareness of the health benefits of physical fitness. • Accommodation, food services: The addition of 1.6 million jobs reflects increases in population, dualincome families and dining sophistication. • Transportation: With companies outsourcing transportation and warehouse services, the sector is expected to increase by 914,000 jobs. • Retail trade: Some 2.1 million jobs will stem from increases in income and leisure time. • Utilities: Employment is projected to decrease by 5.7 percent due to improved technology that increases worker productivity. • Financial services: Real estate and rental and leasing is expected to add 374,000 jobs by 2012. JOBS From Page 4 will be due, in part, to increased demand for housing as the population grows. Finance and insurance is expected to increase by 590,000 jobs. Employment in securities, commodity contracts, and other financial investments and related activities is expected to surge, reflecting the increased number of baby boomers in their peak savings years, the growth of tax-favorable retirement plans, and the globalization of the securities markets. • Government: Employment, including that in public education and hospitals, is expected to increase by 2.5 million jobs. Growth will be fueled by growth in state and local educational services, and the shift of responsibilities from the federal government to the state and local governments. • Other services: An interesting projection is that four out of 10 new jobs in this sector will be in religious organizations. Personal care services will be the fastest growing industry. • Construction: Demand for housing and an increase in road, bridge and tunnel construction will add about 400,000 jobs in this sector. • Manufacturing: Overall, employment will decline by 1 percent or 157,000 jobs. But employment in plastics and rubber products manufacturing and machinery manufacturing will grow, as will pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing. But job automation and international competition will adversely affect employment in many other manufacturing industries. • Agriculture, forestry, fishing, hunting: Employment is expected to fall 2 percent, largely due to technological gains. • Mining: Employment is expected to decrease by some 60,000 jobs. Declining occupational employment stems from declining industry employment, technological advancements, changes in business practices, and other factors. Hot demand today for bilingual workers With more than 40 million Hispanics in the United States and an estimated annual growth rate of 4.65 percent, the community is creating a tremendous demand for bilingual job seekers fluent in Spanish and English. In her book, “Best Careers for Bilingual Latinos,” career development consultant Graciela Kenig says that as Spanish has become the country’s unofficial second language, corporate America has responded with diversity initiatives that seek to recruit, understand and attract a Hispanic/Latino workforce. According to Kenig and other experts, the top industries for bilingual candidates include health care, financial services, sales and marketing, social services and public service. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, reports that there are a number of emerging occupations in social services such as cross-cultural counselors, bilingual teachers and consumer credit counselors. “Being fluent in Spanish is a big plus in social services,” says Evie Engler, vice president for Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago. “In many of the communities we serve, our licensed clinical social workers, case workers and counselors must be bilingual to serve families in need of our counseling, mental health and financial management services.” Banks and mortgage companies seek tellers and loan officers who can converse with their Latino clients. Insurance companies need claims adjustors and administrative staff to assist in processing claims for their diverse client base. One major insurance company, which pays referral fees to employees for candidates who are hired, offered an additional $500 incentive if the new hire was bilingual. Hospitals and pharmaceutical companies are expe Hola W Adios K Goodbye ^ Gracias ' - Thank. You Times Community Graphics/Amy Lloyd riendng some of the greatest demand for bilingual employees to better serve patients. “Being able to speak and understand our patients’ native language ensures proper treatment. Patients must be able to understand medical instructions and prescription dosages, and physicians need to understand symptoms and circumstances related to a patient’s condition,” noted Kathy, a nurse at a suburban hospital in Chicago. lb sell goods and services to a multicultural market, corporations must hire people who understand the language and culture of their clients and their vendors. Karen, an inside sales manager in Columbia, Md., needed call center associates to process orders for paint testing equipment from business clients in Central and South America. “Finding candidates who were fluent in Spanish and also had strong sales ability were two key criteria in reviewing resumes and deciding who I would interview.” In nearly every field and profession, from financial services to sales, there is a growing need to hire multilingual candidates. In addition to Spanish, companies that have offices and clients throughout the world seek employees who can speak languages from Russian to German, French to Mandarin. According to a recruiter in California, “Job seekers who speak Japanese, Chinese and Mandarin are becoming a hot commodity among employers, particularly on the West Coast.” Not only are bilingual skills helpful for seasoned professionals in the job market, graduates who are fluent in a second language are finding that they have an extra edge during job interviews. While bilingual skills aren’t always required to land good jobs, many companies prefer to hire candidates with this added dimension. If you are can speak two or more languages with equal or near equal fluency, and are able to speak and perhaps read and write more than one language very well, tell employers up front that you have this ability. Even if your prospective employer may not have an immediate need for your multiple language capabilities, it is likely to see your fluency as an added benefit and asset in the hiring process. Consider including this information in your cover letter and in your resume’s career or skills summary. Refer to your skills as “bilingual,” or “multilingual” if you speak three or more languages.' Then, fist each language, including English. Be honest though. If you just had a couple of semesters of a language in high school or college, use the phrase “knowledge of...” Never overstate or understate your expertise. — Courtesy of CareerBuilders.com Experience in the textile industry a plus but. Master the art of a first impression The fine art of professional selling is a production. You can do it poorly, or you can do it excellently. A great deal of selling depends on interaction with your prospective client. But - to a great deal - within the first two minutes of any interaction, the client has already formed a bias. Either he wants to be working with you to reach a common goal, or he’s simply getting as much information as he can to share with your competitor for a better deal. You can be prepared to wow your prospects when you pay close attention to how your prospect “senses” that he should do business with you. Think of every sensory interaction that your prospect has with you from the first meeting until the first time they buy from you. Each of those interactions will build the prospect’s vision of you. What are some of the sensory (sigh, hearing, smell, feel) experiences your prospect has that reflect who you are before he says “Yes’?” You may not be conscious of these interactions, but your prospect is. Do not leave any of these interactions to chance. •Your introductory commercial. If you are networking or being introduced to someone, this is the first chance they have to make an impression of you. Don’t blow it by “winging” this. Develop a scripted two-sentence commer cial for your business and be able to deliver it with ease. Practice, practice, practice. •Your outbound voice mail messages. You can bet that you will get placed into more voice mail boxes than you will get people live. Again, don’t lei this embarrass you because you’re not prepared. You called them - how could you not know what you are going to say? •Your inbound voice mail messages. Change your voice mail message daily, if possible. Set expectations for when you’ll be unavailable during the day and when you’ll be returning calls. Suggest an alternate number for an emergency if you are not immediately available. And be sure to check those messages and return calls. •Your car. Yes - from time to time, clients walk you to your car - meet you in the lot when they are arriving at the same time as you. Throw away the hamburger wrappers and the pop cans off the floorboards. Can this win accounts for you? It can lose them! Do it today. •Your business cards. Have plenty of them. Know where they are. Carry them in such a way as to guarantee that they won’t be dogeared when you present them. This is a production. Don’t hand someone your business card, See IMPRESSION, Page 20 9-1-1 DISPATCHER EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST Are you career minded? Do you have good multi-tasking skills? Four steps to your dream job Plan like you’re going on a date (NAPSI) — Whether you’re looking for a career change or your first real job, a few tips could help you go far. To help, Wendy Straker, author of “Sexy Jobs in the City,” and “Apprentice” finalist Kendra Todd partnered with Dove, the global beauty brand, to launch the Find Your Dream Job college program, which guides young women toward finding their dream job, using the rules of dating. Straker says going on a job interview is a little like getting ready for a date. She shares four easy tips — from courting your dream career to sealing the deal — for your dream job: 1. Get people to set you up. It’s not just what you know, but who you know. As in dating, your friends or family may be able to “set you up” with the perfect employer — don’t be afraid to ask. 2. Dress the part. Know the style of the company with which you’re interviewing and tailor your look to match. An interview at a children’s television network, for instance, needs a different look from one at a news magazine. 3. The thrill of the chase. Go about the job search like you would go about a date. Though you don’t want to play too hard to get (let them know you are interested), you should close the interview leaving your potential employer wanting more 66 For too long there has been a narrow view of what it takes to find your dream job. The way to find your perfect match is to be true to yourself, dive in, defy fear and discover your passion. Kendra Todd 4. Make contact the next day. Regardless of whether you want the job, you want them to want to hire you. Send out a handwritten thank you note the next day. The note should be brief, complimentary and, if possible, unique. “For too long,” Todd adds, “there has been a narrow view of what it takes to find your dream job. The way to find your perfect match is to be true to yourself, dive in, defy fear and discover your passion.” '• >V~\ - Where it all comes together. Don’t talk too fast (He won’t trust you) or too slow (Hell think you are talking down to him). For both sexes, the lower you make your voice naturally, the more respect you command. • Your handshake. Match to slightly lead your client in firmness when you shake hands. Don’t show off your hand strength as a sign of your confidence. • Your clothes. Dress a little above the expectation of your clients. Show them that you respect them by what you wear. The best outfit to wear is one that draws no attention to itself. You’re going to dress differently to visit a Fortune 500 CFO than you will to visit the manager of a landscape company. • Your accessories and grooming. For men, your shoes, watch and ■ sw m r grooming should be impeccable. For women, nails, shoes and accessories are always on display. • Your odor. Very light scents are the key here. Don’t overpower, but be impeccably fresh. Whatever you do - don’t miss out on the chance to make a first impression by offering anything less than perfect breath. If you’re not careful, they are also easy to overlook. Make a personal list to start your work day and one before each call.
