Elizabeth Beale Harrison Monroe died on May 9 at her home in Bethesda, MD, surrounded by her family. Her courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease served to remind those who loved her of the vibrant and spirited woman she remained ever at heart. Libby was bom on June 2, 1919, in Hopewell, Virginia. Her parents were David A. Harrison, Jr., and Elizabeth Davis Harrison. Libby met her future husband, broadcast journalist Bill Monroe, while attending Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans. Her marriage of 66 years was a source of joy, which could also be said of her four daughters, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A student of Washington artist Jack Ferlmutter, her paintings received numerous private showings. She also excelled at pottery, stained glass and decorative plasterwork. Her many charitable interests included serving as a docent for the National Cathedral and as a tutor for underprivileged children. She loved nothing better
