The year: 1919. Hostilities of the First World War rapidly faded to memory as area residents embraced the approaching summertime swelter in Fauquier.
Hot weather set in around mid-May that yean but over on the southwest side of town, a pack of junior innovators were finding a unique way to beat the heat. Peggy and Betsy Keith of Dunottar. Temple Gwathmey of Canterbury, Edith and Betty Nesbit of Alwington, Mae Femeyhough and Mildred Gaines joined forces to convince managers of the esteemed Warrenton Horse Show to lend their Shirley Avenue grounds for a kid’s show; sort of a midsummer kid’s festival, they said.
With that, the Warrenton Pony Show was born.
The tradition continues to this day, with the oldest junior-run competition in America this week July 3-6. Classes at the A-rated event begin at 8 a.m. each day. ■ “It is one of the best traditions in Warrenton,'’ said one-time adult “advisor” Wilma Hoovler, whose granddaughter Lauren Hair is a junior president for the 2008 show. “Everybody loves the pony show”
The show is fully junior operated, with young committee members handling everything from hiring the judges to ordering port-a-potties.
Lauren Hair and Kristina Stone are this year’s copresidents. They are supported by nearly 50 junior helpers. The Puller Hughes scholarship awards college tuition money to selected junior committee members.
Proceeds from the show benefit the Fauquier SPCA.
Admission is free, and classes range from equitation, all sizes of pony divisions, children s hunters, breeding classes, and Connemara and Caspian ponies. The only adult classes — just two divisions — are limited to amateur riders.
