For most in today's super-sized American culture, simply running a mile is a difficult twit. Running 3,200 miles, now that's an entirely different story
For Elena Helmerick. a 24 yearold Mount Vernon Farm intern, it’s a story that began on April l when she set out to run coast to coast across the United States, becoming the 10th woman in history to ever achieve the trek.
Starting at the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia Beach, Helmerick relied upon donations made on her Web site www.run3200.com to tund her trip. It took her tour months, but on July 24, like a scene from Forrest Gump. Helmerick reached the Pacific Ocean.
Her message? To promote sustainable living and healthy changes in the way people eat. live, and play through getting more exercise, buying locally grown produce, and in turn, protecting the environment.
“I was already passionate about healthy food, but after working here in Rappahannock and seeing how people operate, it become so obvious that this is a great answer to a lot of our country's problems as tar as health goes,* Hehuenck said. "That's why it became my’ message w hile 1 was running *
The cross-country runner returned to SperryvUJe on Aug. lt> to visit her former boss and owner of Mount Wnwn Farm. Cliff Millet who supported his intern in making this seemingly impossible trip.
“She cares very much about the food that we and the annuals eat. She cared a lot about the animals she worked with, making them as healthy as they could be for the people that ate them,* he said.
