More than $100,000 is at stake at the weekend's Virginia Fall Races, a meet made all the more important by the unprecedented cancellation of three big races at the Sept. 27 Shawan meet in Maryland.
Torrential rain forced the race committee to scrap a $20,000 hurdle stakes and a $25,000 open timber stake at Shawan.
That means that timber horses, in particular. that are angling for a prep race before the $50,000 International Gold Cup or $50,000 New Jersey Hunt Cup Oct. 18 are likely entrants in Saturdays $85,000 Chronicle Cup.
The 3 1/4-mile stake has long served as a stepping.stone to the Gold Cup and Hunt Clip, but this year it may stand .done as the sole pipe-opener for the timber class.
