Muzzleloader deer season, also called black-powder season, runs Nov. 1-14, with rifle season Nov. 15Jan. 3.
“During all the deer seasons, it is really smart to wear some visible blaze orange when you’re out in the woods, whether you’re out walking or riding,” said VDG1F official Julie Dixon. “The law states that anyone hunting in general firearms season [rifle seasonj must wear blaze orange, but we recommend that everyone using the woods during this time consider using blaze orange.”
Orange is highly visible at long distances, Dixon explained, and is universally recognized as a safety device to alert armed hunters of the presence of others in the woods.
Blaze orange vests and helmet covers are available for riders, as are patches to stitch to saddle blankets, and even larger orange pieces to place on turnout rugs and rain sheets for pastured horses.
“In Fauquier County riders that use the Phelps and Thompson Wildlife Management Areas need to stay aware of the hunting seasons,” Dixon added. “Be mindful that those areas were created specifically tor hunting, and that though other outdoor recreation is allowed there, hunting is the primary use of those parks.”
A holdover from old “blue law” days that prevented many forms of recreation on Sundays — including beer and liquor sales — still mean that there is no hunting on Sundays in Virginia.
However, wildlife man, agement areas are often used for field trials on weekends.
“Everyone needs to coexist,” Dixon said. “Different user groups can all get along — just remain aware of one another.”
Though deer season is by far the most popular for hunters, bear season and turkey season also run over the next tew months.
