Both Hromyak and Merriman see the program as a starting point to a program that could become much larger.
“The grant will help subsidize the bus until it is viable and can stand on its own.' said Hromyak. “When that point comes, well hopefully start another bus at a slightly different tame." The idea is to continue to expand and offer additional service to different areas in die planning district, which includes Fauquier. Culpeper, Rappahannock. Madison, and Orange counties.
“I think we have a really good core {pmp of people who are willing to utilize bus service," she said. “If you get one bus going and it’s working. then you start another bus. Loudoun County started with one bus and now has 35. All of these transportation programs started with one bus."
Merriman sees plenty of opportunity for commuter buses as a way to connect workers in more rural areas with mil service or shuttle them directly to work.
“We dont think we’ll see rail get past Prince William County" Merriman said. “Our five-year business plan is to bridge the gap. The ridership is going to be there because everybody is trying to save money. For our area, it’s a win-win.
