Program for the Headwaters Foundation, made the announcement to the School Board at its Tuesday meeting. Hope said she had only received the letter notifying her and Collins of the selection that day
In the letter dated Dec. 4 from Dr. Patricia Wright. Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Wright said Collin's “strong academic ability, demonstrated service to the community and leadership skills,'’ were among the reasons he was selected for the program.
Collins said he is “very excited” about the week-long program. which runs from March 7 to March 14.
Participants last year toured the Capitol, White House. Supreme Court and the Pentagon; met with members of Congress, the Supreme Court, the French Ambassador and even the President.
Hope said she had learned of the program through the Virginia Department of Education, and alter reading the requirements said to herself “AJ can do this.” She also said she thought the “odds were pretty slim” but still urged Collins to follow through with the application. She said Collins memorized every Virginia public official from the governor down to “notary publics.”
Collins' focus at school has been almost exclusively academic - which he insists is “tun” - but his other activities include President of the Leo Club la junior affiliate of the Lions Club) and organizing Christmas caroling in nearby Washington. He is also captain of the Scholastic l^uiz Bowl team.
Collins studies mostly in the library these days as the majority of his classes are advanced placement. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is on track tu be this year's valedictorian.
Collins said that he already has been accepted with a lull scholarship at the University of Alabama, but that he is still waiting to near from several other colleges including Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Collins lives with his mother. Chris, and lather. David, in Amissville. Chris Collins, who works at the RCHJ> library said that this was a “wondertul opportunity” for Collins to meet other students from across the nation
And, of course, she said that she and her husband. David, were “very proud of him.”
