Scout’s 3-Day March to Retrace Lee’s Retreat Hiking and history will be tightly into: woven this week end when Ex plorer Scouts in the Piedmont Area Council pf 14 counties retrace 38 miles of the route of Lee's retreat from Savior's Creek to Appomattox. About 60 Explorers and 15 adult leaders will start the three-day march near Lee , fold headquar ters. near Rice, from where he watched the fighting at Savior's Creek. The trek will end at the Surrender Grounds. The expedition, to start about 4 p.m.. Crossing Appomattox The route first will follow the Jamestown Road, one of the several lateral routes used by the retreating forces under General Robert E Lee. The crossing of the Appomattox river will be over a rope bridge constructed during the week end by adult leaders. The march will continue through Cumberland county, with the hikers crossing Route 45 near Cumberland Church, heading down the toll road, thence through the Appomattox state forest along Lee's route to Route 24 and on to old Appomattox Court House.
