WTTH the new high-powered automobiles and the modern highways speed regu lations are exceeded almost unconsciously. The new cars cruise around 55 miles an hour and with just a little bit of pressure on the accelerator the heavy cars will de velop speeds of 60, 65, 70 miles an hour with little realization of speed to those rid ing. The driver must keep an eye on the peedometer constantly. On a iong stretch of open road, relatively free of traffic, many drivers unconsciously add that extra pressure on the accelerator, and then—the speed limit is exceeded. This observation is not written in defense i 1' the Secret Service man, who was driving the limousine of President Eisenhower at speeds of 70 miles an hour last Friday. He should have had better control of his in clination to press a little harder under such conditions. We do not believe the President realized that his car was breaking the au thorized speed limit unnecessarily. However, we do know that the tendency to speed is there. It is in just such places on open roads,, traffic free, that the State Police often set up the “whammy”. Too often the State Police set the “whammy”
