Tomorrow Bright In Hands of Today’s Youth Editor of The Farmville Herald My wife and I have just return ed from chaperoning a group of fourteen Cumberland High School Beta Club members at Hate-wide Beta Club convention at the John Marshall Hotel in Richmond. Since there were over 1300 teen-ages at this convention, we feel that we had ample opportun ity for observing the youth of to day and the leadi: of tomorrow. It was an enlightening experience for me and 1 wish every adult could have observed this group at work and at play. These young people seem to know where they are going, how they will get there, and who is going with them. They know right from wrong and good from bad. The behavior of the entire group could have put to shame many adult conventions of equal size. I can't say that these young people were not noisy. It is dif ficult to imagine the roar of their laughter, the ring of their song, and the boom of their applause. It may also be hard to believe that this same noisy group can be a most attentive audience, and that from its rankg come digni fied. capable, and serious speak ers. Many adults would fall short if placed in competition with this group, whether in behavior or in capabilities. The parents of the fourteen Cumberland High School students whom we chaperoned may well be proud of them. We found their standards high and their behavior I irreproachable. They were poised and dignified when the occasion required it. and were ready for fun when the time came for that. In a body they attended every session of the convention without being told to cio so. They sought the front rows and were on time for every meeting. Mrs. Putney almost disgraced me by being the only one even a tiny bit late for a meeting.
