held on July 10, with outstanding speak ers. The two institutes are supported financ ially by the Longwood College Alumnae Association and sponsored by the College. This is the first institute to be devoted spe cifically to the study of Southern culture, so far as can be determined. In these days pf national and international changes and attacks on Southern background both open and subtle in the press, T-Y, and theatre, this institute has an added interest. South ern culture needs to be understood and strengthened at home, and explained in other areas of the nation. The intriguing subjects under discussion and the varied scholarship and experience of the lecturers whet the curiosity and challenge the inter est of all of those who have an interest in the South and its importance to the na tion.
