Visiting Teacher Program

In recent years much fine work has been done to enable teachers to understand more completely the behavior of children. Teachers have felt the need for assistance in analyzing the problems of some pupils. One purpose of the visiting teacher program is to assist in supplying teachers with this

''that, while nothing can substitute for the teacher's close relationship with the home, the time limitations, increasing load of classroom responsibility, and the enlarged area of borne distribution ■ due to consolidation are constantly reducing the opportunity of the teacher to work closely with the' homes of the pupils. The visiting teacher may be an invaluable aid in this capacity and through her we may be able to realize more nearly the ideal of the home and _ school working together for the well-being of the child.
Reviewing thf function of the visiting teacher program as outlined by the State Board of Edv ucation, we find that emphasis is 1 given to three aspects as follows: (1) attention to the problems that relate to the school work of the child such as health factors, social relationships, home and family conditions, and others; (2) guidance in relating the school to the child’s problem; (3) utilization of the resources afforded by other community agencies, such as public health, to remedy conditions which impede the child’s development.
At the onset, it should be noted that the work of the visiting teacher is not confined to that work usually done by an attendance officer in those'divisions in which there is no visiting teacher, but the scope of her work is much broader as may be seen from the aforementioned aspects. Problems other than those -of attendance may result in , the lack of adjustment on the part of the pupil. Often this is caused by a misunderstanding of what the school is trying to do. It is in this capacity that the visiting teacher has her greatest opportunity. She will act as the liaison officer between the home and the school to insure more, effective schooling opportunity for each child enrolled in our schools.
