“At three o’clock THis morning the town was awakenpd by the shouts of fire. The barber shop . oyrtied by Phelbert Green was burning to the ground. Mr. O. L. Meigs was the first to discover the fire and turned on the town water. The telephone operator called each line to tell them of the fire. The Culpepper fire department was called and they got here just a little late.
“Mr. C/ T. Bruce ruehed into - the burning building at the risk of his life and grabbed three hair tonic bottles. Only two of the bottles were empty and he broke , the full one coming out. He was cut and scorched on the hand.
“Mrs. W. jP. Moffett rushed down the street'with a very small pitcher of water. She saw the whole town calmly watching the huilding burn and' screamed “Why doesn’t somebody do something” . twice. Then she remembered that she had left water running in her jsdhome and had to rush madly back -v f to cut it off.
“Mr. W. C. Campbell had one bucket of water so he asked the mayor if he should take the water up to the reservoir and put it in it. ,
“The only things that were saved from the fire were the cash register, barber chair and these two empty bottles. Of the town’s soundest sleepers the Leas, Prices, Herndons, and Bussells rate first.”
