During the past year 4-H clubs have functioned in the following Rappahannock communities: Belle Meade, Sperryville, Washington, Forest Grove) Amissville, Flint Hill, and Reager. The Washington club was so large that at the beginning of the 1948-49 year (school session) a junior and a senior club were formed. At the beginning of this year’s school term the same was found necessary at Sperryville. %

At this time 4-H members are in the process of completing project records and therefore it is impossible, to say exactly, what the achievements have been. In all there were 133 girls and 67 boys enrolled during 1948-1949. These boys conducted the following projects: corn 2; Irish potatoes 11; garden 3; dairy heifers 8; sow and litter 16; fat jftg 15; sheep 4; poultry 3; and rabbits 1.

During August 34 4-H members attended camp at Powells Fort Valley foy a week. Besides recreation, instruction was also given in handicraft* and nature study. Two girls and one boy attended the state 4-H short course held annuailly at Blacksburg. Eighteen head of hogs were sold at the Orange Fat Swine Show and Sale by ^Rappahannock boys. Newbill Miller’s pen of three Berkshire were declared champions of that breed. ■Some club boys who have done done good work this year are Kelly Updike, Junior and Douglas Martin, and.Richard Griffith. Un«, der this project each boy has a minimum of five grade ewes and is judged by the state 4->H livestock specialist on flock management with this score sheet: metal ear tag identification 5 points; use of pure bred ram 10 points; eradication of internal and external parasites 15 points;* lambs docked and castrated 5 points; shearing and handling of fleeces 10 points; shelter 5 points, rations 20 points 5 record 5 points; work and interest 10 points; type, size, quality, and condition of ewe flock and lambs at shearing time 15 points. 1948-49 score of these was as follows: Kelly Updike 91; Martin Bros. &6; and Richard Griffith 85. Prizes included phenothiazine, drenching syringes, metal ear tags and . pincers, elastrators and' bands and. electric shear-master.
