Complete farm plans for the conservation of soil and water have been developed with five farmers in (Rappahannock and Culpeper counties during the past two weeks. Mrs. Fannie P. East*ham of Flint Hill is the most re- - cent Rappahannock farmer to have developed a conservation plan for her 182-acre farm.
All of the complete farm conservation plans are developed on the basis of correct land use. Each • acre on tne farm is used for the purpose for which it is best suited; by. that is. meant . cropland,.... meadow, permanent pasture, wildlife area, or woodland. The level and gently sloping fields that have good soil types and only slight erosion are best adapted for growing soil-depleting crops s^ch as corn and the small grains. The steeper fields that have been more severely eroded are best adapted for permanent pasture and close growing crops, whereas the steep, * badly eroded fields containing the poorer soil types are best suited for woodland. Woodland, under proper protection and management, gives the maximum protection to the soil against water erosion. Correct land use and treating each acre on the farm according to its needs is most important in preventing soil erosion, water loss, and in building the soil fertility on the farms of the district.
