The Community Christmas Tree program last Saturday night opened with the chiming of the church bells of the town on one of the coldest nights of the season. The carols were sung by the choirs of the Washington churches. The First Baptist church choir sang “Joy to the World” and “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful.” The Baptist, Episcopal and Methodist combined choirs sang “Silent Night” and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas.”
Mayor Dorothy C. Davis spoke in appreciation of the help from Miss Ruth Stevens and Mrs. Ben Cox, who represented the Auxiliary of the Fire Company, and Miss Elisabeth Racer, who represented the town council in arranging the program, to the ladies of the Home Demonstration club, who fixed bags of goodies and toys for the children, Rappahannock High school for the use of the loud speaker, and the business men of the town of Washington, who made the Community Tree possible, George Wood, M. M. Hawkins and his scouts. To to town and to the churches of the community for their co-operation in the program.
